Loaded the last session (2026-09-14, 19:46 — "review bot performance today"). Here's where it left off:

**Findings:** 48 trades across 21 tickers today, net **-$136.85**. Every exit was `MOMENTUM_FADE` or `HEALTH_DETERIORATION` — never a target or hard stop. Cross-checked against real Yahoo 1-min charts:

- **Whipsaw-churn** (biggest driver, ~-$43): SECZ, ALLT, BTE, STLA, FUBO, NWL — bot exits then re-buys the *same* stock seconds-to-minutes later at nearly the same price, repeatedly, on flat/noisy names. Root cause: `same_symbol_reentry_cooldown_minutes: 0`.
- **Exited too early** (~-$5 missed): COMP, AMPL, HUN — stock kept climbing right after exit.
- **Exit was right**: TTD, TIC, JOBY, FIGS, SOC, TNON — good calls (TNON's -$94 was a confirmed real crash/slippage issue, already fixed mid-day, not a bad timing call).
- **Neutral/immaterial** (~-$9): JBS, NU, SOUN, MNRO, ATEC, WLTH.

**Root cause:** `momentum_fade_exit` in `position_manager.py` uses one fixed threshold (`velocity_stall_threshold: 0.0`, `pressure_threshold: -10`) for every stock, no confirmation delay — same sensitivity for a calm stock and a choppy one.

**Suggested fix (two small, targeted changes, no rebuild):**
1. Scale the fade threshold by each stock's own recent ATR instead of one fixed number for all 21 tickers.
2. Add a 2-3 min cooldown before re-entering the same symbol after a fade-exit (currently 0).

The conversation ended on this open question to you:

> Want me to walk through how the ATR-scaled threshold would actually work on a couple of today's real trades (e.g. BTE vs SOC) before I touch anything, or should I go ahead and implement both changes?

Which would you like to do?

Pulled the actual per-poll readings for both trades from `data/fast_engine/momentum_fade_2026-09-14.jsonl` and matched them against real ATR readings from the same day. Here's what the numbers actually show — and it's more nuanced than the simple story I gave you initially.

## BTE: 5 round-trips in 68 seconds

Every fade read on BTE today, with the ATR reading closest to that moment (ATR computed on 1-min bars, `atr_pct` ≈ 0.206%, i.e. this stock's normal minute-to-minute wiggle was about a fifth of a percent):

| Time | velocity_sub | pressure | Fired? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13:55:31 | -0.0033%/s | -14.1 | YES |
| 13:55:43 | -0.0065%/s | -17.8 | YES |
| 13:55:55 | -0.0065%/s | -17.8 | YES |
| 13:56:12 | 0.0%/s | -13.0 | YES |
| 13:56:23 | 0.0%/s | -12.4 | YES |

Price the whole time: **$5.085 → $5.10**, a 0.3% band. This stock genuinely never moved — those velocity readings are just tick noise scattered around zero.

## SOC: 2 fades over 3.5 minutes, on a real move

| Time | velocity_sub | pressure | ATR at the time | Fired? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14:02:42 | -0.0055%/s | -11.6 | 0.447% | YES |
| 14:03:04 | -0.0024%/s | -12.8 | 0.447% | YES |

Trade: entered $5.2721, exited $5.30 (+2.8¢, real gain), re-entered $5.305, exited $5.30 (small giveback). Yahoo confirmed this landed right at the local top.

## Running the ATR-scaled math

The idea: instead of a flat 0.0 cutoff, scale it to each stock's own noise — `threshold = -k × (atr_pct / 60)` (spreading the 1-min ATR over 60 seconds gives a "normal per-second wobble" for that stock).

**BTE** (atr_pct 0.206%) → per-second noise ≈ 0.0034%/s. At k=1.0, threshold = **-0.0034%/s**. Checking the 5 readings against it: the first read (-0.0033) and the two zero reads no longer count as "stalled" — only the two -0.0065 reads still fire. **5 fades → 2.**

**SOC** (atr_pct 0.447%, actually *more* volatile than BTE at that moment) → per-second noise ≈ 0.0075%/s. Same k=1.0, threshold = **-0.0075%/s**. Neither of SOC's actual readings (-0.0055, -0.0024) clears that bar. **Both of SOC's good, well-timed exits disappear.**

## The catch

A straight proportional scale doesn't win cleanly — it fixes BTE's noise problem but also mutes SOC's *correct* calls, because SOC happened to have higher ATR at the time, and a symmetric formula loosens the trigger for every high-ATR stock, good signal or not. That's the same pendulum this system already lived through with `fade_confirmation` (too loose) vs. the current check (too rigid) — a naive fix risks swapping one failure mode for the other rather than actually solving it.

What the data does support cleanly: **the reentry cooldown**. Nothing about BTE's ATR or threshold tuning matters if the bot simply can't re-buy the same symbol for 2-3 minutes after a fade — the 5-trades-in-68-seconds loop becomes physically impossible regardless of how the velocity threshold is tuned. That's a low-risk, unambiguous fix.

ATR-scaling the velocity threshold is a real idea but needs either a floor-only version (widen it *only* for genuinely tight-range stocks, never loosen it for volatile ones like SOC) or a few more days of this same snapshot log to tune `k` properly — not something to ship on one day's data.

**My recommendation:** implement the reentry cooldown now (clear win, no downside shown in the data), and hold off on velocity-threshold scaling until we've validated a one-sided version against more days of data. Want me to go ahead with just the cooldown change?

Found the live transcript for this session. I can run the same logging hook against it right now to produce the saved Markdown file, rather than waiting for session end.

Saved: `logs/conversations/2026-09-14_1956_reload-last-chat_ee527102.md` — has the full reload of the prior session plus the ATR-scaling walkthrough for BTE vs SOC.

Note: this normally happens automatically at session end via the `SessionEnd` hook, so you don't need to ask again each time — but since we're still mid-session, I ran the same hook manually to snapshot it now. If we keep talking, re-run this (or just wait for session end) to capture the rest.
